How to create an invoice

What every invoice must contain

Requirements differ by country, but almost everywhere an invoice needs the same core information: the word “invoice”, a unique sequential number, the issue date, your full business details including tax number, your client's details, a clear description of what was supplied, the amount excluding tax, the tax rate and amount, and the total due. Billr's templates have a place for every one of these by default. What your own invoice has to carry on top of that depends on your country, your trade and your client, so check it with your accountant or your tax authority.

If you have to correct an invoice you already sent, do not edit it. Issue a credit note that references the original. That is what auditors expect, and it is why Billr locks an invoice the moment you send it.

Common questions

Is this invoice generator really free?

Yes. You can create and download as many invoices as you like without an account and without paying. A free account is only needed if you want to save invoices, store clients and track payments.

Do I need to create an account?

No. The generator works entirely in your browser, and nothing is uploaded to a server. Your draft is saved locally so you can close the tab and come back to it.

Can I add VAT, GST or sales tax?

Yes. Each line has its own tax rate, so you can apply VAT 21%, GST 10%, Sales Tax 8.25% or any rate you need. Set it to zero if you do not charge tax.

What currencies are supported?

Over twenty, including EUR, USD, GBP, CHF, CAD, AUD, SEK, JPY, INR and more. Amounts are formatted correctly for the currency you pick.

Can I make a credit note or a quote?

Yes. Switch the document type at the top of the form to create a credit note, a quote or a receipt using the same templates.
